Summary
Essek’s voice is lovely, his accent smooth and familiar, his timbre pleasant and soft. It had taken him a while to relax to this level–it always does, with him. Caleb does not always know the places he goes, but he knows they are dangerous.
Caleb knows, too, that Essek does not tell him everything. It itches, vaguely.

Summary
Essek Thelyss is in Astrid’s office.
She enters brusquely, holding up a hand like it will keep him at bay, and says, “I am not doing this with you right now.”
He’s sitting in her desk chair, folding his hands smugly up at her, eyes wide and serene as a doe’s. He says, “Hello, Archmage,” and Astrid says, “Get out.”

Summary
Shadowhand is an apt title, given Essek’s propensity for lingering at the fringes of the Nein’s conversations, responding politely when addressed but refraining from instigating. He frequently drifts into a room in the tower, reviews the contents as if not having seen them before, and then retreats to his room. The exuberance of late-night research and study into their discoveries in Aeor stokes a fire in Caleb’s gut so hot that it makes him sweat, and then Essek’s awkward distance each morning leaves him blowing on dying embers in the rain.
If Caleb spends one more minute sitting alone on the lounge in the salon, he is going to die.

Summary
“How much do you know about elven physiology?”
The sudden matter-of-fact–ness takes Caleb off guard. Could this be going where he thinks it might be going? “Not very much.” Not nearly as much as he would like.
“Right.” Essek inhales, worrying a fang at his bottom lip. “Well, it is not dissimilar to human physiology — but there are differences.”
“Of course.” Caleb nods, ever the eager student. “Longevity being a key one.”
“Well, yes, there is that, but—”
“And pointy ears,” Caleb blurts out.
Essek gives him a long, hard look, part reproach, part… something else. “Not just pointy,” he finally says. “They are… rather sensitive, as well.”

Or: When the wizards meet up in Aeor, Essek is woefully underdressed for the weather. Out of concern for his Kryn-friend's extremities, Caleb offers to help, with unforeseen (horny) consequences.Bookmarked by msfps
