Summary
At "closer to 40 than not," as Alex puts it, she finds herself fresh out of a divorce, starting a new job, and moving halfway across the country. It's mostly coincidence that the move and the new job put her right in the path of one oldest Evans daughter. Through some stroke of luck or maybe a level of coolness she didn't know she possessed, Alex manages not to make a complete fool of herself to the big sister of a man whose work, and advocacy, and, yeah, okay, his looks, she's admired for as long as she can remember, and she and Carly are actually friends. Good friends. It's too bad that can only last so long before Alex risks doing something really stupid.

She and Dodger are sitting at a table on the patio of one of her favorite breakfast places near her old townhouse while Chris orders for them inside. He’s really gone all out with this whole surprise birthday trip thing, between getting her kids together at her favorite beach, the AirBnB with a view of that same beach, takeout last night from her favorite local seafood place, and now breakfast. It’s all been a little overwhelming and she’s having a hard time believing it’s real and not just a very elaborate dream, but honestly, that kind of describes her whole life since he came into it.

About 50% of the time when they'd told people that She was pregnant the second time, they'd tilted their heads sympathetically and said something about how careful you have to be with birth control in the months after having a baby. "Yeah," they'd say, "you really have to watch out for those crazy hormones." Or even just, "Oops." But it was never an accident. This was always exactly what they'd wanted, to have their kids within only a couple of years of one another so that, hopefully, they'd grow up like Chris and his siblings - each other's best friends and number one fans.

He gets frustrated with them sometimes, and has to do things he doesn’t want to do, the normal kid stuff, but he’s never been scared to tell his parents anything. Not once. He’s never worried that he wasn’t enough, or thought that he had to shield any of them from dealing with any part of him. He’s never felt anything other than unconditional love and acceptance, even while being held accountable for his own words and actions.

Charlie sits on the living room floor, coloring at the coffee table, while Chris watches pre-season football coverage. It’s been just him and his boy for most of the day while She and Addy have been at a soccer clinic then a birthday party. He’d tried to make it a fairly active morning, taking his boy to breakfast at a small locally owned cafe they all love - She and Chris for their coffee, the kids for their pastries and smoothies (which She and Chris also love for the kids, thanks to their hidden vegetables) - then taking Bucky Dog to the park for a few hours of fetch and tag and feeding (and chasing) the ducks. Since lunch, though, they’ve been relaxing at home, Chris happily lounging on the couch while Charlie and Bucky take over most of the floor area in front of him with coloring books, crayons, and chew toys.
“Daddy?” Charlie says without taking his eyes off the image in front of him, his hand still moving across the page.
Chris mutes the television. “Yeah bud?”
Charlie puts his crayon down then turns so that he’s half-facing Chris, one forearm resting on the top of the table and the other hand rubbing over Bucky’s flank. “How come you’re married to Mommy, but Uncle Scott is married to Uncle Steve?”

She runs her palms over the deep emerald green chiffon of her cocktail dress and looks down at herself. “Yeah?” She asks when she looks back up at him, her eyebrows raised. He only nods and takes a couple steps into the room.
“So,” he drawls, then reaches to pull her hands from her hips and drape them over his own shoulders, replacing them with his own once she links her fingers behind his neck, “you ready to do this?”
She draws in a long, deep breath, then drops her forehead to his collarbone as she blows it out her mouth. “As I’ll ever be, I suppose.”
“Hey, come on now.” He squeezes her hips until she tilts her head back just enough to peer up at him through her lashes. “We got this. You and me, we’re a team, right?”

Even after getting to the hospital and seeing her there in the bed looking so, so small, and talking to the doctor about her injuries, Chris had managed to stay in a sort of denial about how bad the accident was - or could have been. But this morning he talked to the police officer who had responded to the accident and written up the report for the insurance companies, and the officer had agreed to email him a copy of the report and the pictures he’d taken at the scene. The pictures of her car, the driver’s side almost completely demolished, had made him ill. The images made it very, very clear that things could have turned out so much worse than they are, and really he’s just grateful for the manageable injuries she ended up with.
