As they sail for home on the Enterprise, Francis and James carve out new routines.
“‘Nother turn.” James was wheezing now, and leaned heavily on Francis’s shoulder in the pale dawn light. After a quarter of an hour of walking, he now shook like a ship’s cat in the midst of a great guttering storm, though the puff of wind coming off the starboard side was barely more than a light breeze.
“James.” Francis tightened his hold on his Second’s shoulders, unable to shift the worry from his own expression. “We’ve walked eight lengths already. Are you certain?”

London, 1850
It’s been four months since the remnants of the Franklin Expedition returned from the Arctic, fragmented and ill, but very much alive. To commemorate their remarkable survival, the Admiralty has elected to host a dinner for the surviving officers – but what they do not know is that the men who returned from the frozen north are not the same men who entered it.
James Fitzjames is healing, but he is not whole. Francis has been his diligent nurse, at his side almost constantly since Ross swept them off the ice, and as he helps James dress for the admiralty dinner, James expresses his regret that Francis has had to sacrifice so much of his time, so much of his vitality to him.
