Summary
Being alone is a choice— you tell yourself that because choosing it instead of being doomed to solitude is less pathetic. It makes you independent, not lonely. You’re not a loser for being a voluntary loner.
The lines of ‘chosen independence’ start blurring in the face of strange-natured company. Hannibal eats people. Will should be terrified every time a missing fisherman’s limb is said to have appeared on the shore, their families sobbing on the news. He finds he’s not.
