Annerose smoothed her skirt out over her legs for a second. Magdalena waited for her to work up the nerve to say what she was going to say. “I need something.”
“What?”
“Please don’t tell anyone this,” she said.
“My lips are sealed,” Magdalena said. “I’m very good at keeping secrets.”
“I need—“ Annerose began, and she found it hard to get the words out. “A poison.”

He rushed past her legs, the frantic run of a kid still figuring out how fast he could coordinate his legs moving underneath him. She leaned down to grab him as he sped, laughing, past the bathroom door, and she managed to get her hands around his waist and pick him up.
He felt strangely light, like he had when he was very, very young, like she could toss him up into the air, like he might simply fly away.
She stood him on the bathroom counter like a doll, looking over his shoulder into the wide mirror. Elfriede von Kohlrausch stared back at her from the glass, disheveled and hungry, and Felix smiled and reached out towards her reflection.
“You don’t look anything like your mama, do you?” she said.

Emil consulted his memory of Alexander’s personal medical record— there would have been a note in there if he was left handed. Immediately, Emil understood that something strange was going on, and that Alexander had not just wandered into his office for a social visit.
“Yes, it is,” Emil said. “I knew him when I was your age.”
“That’s why my mother gave you this job.”
There was no point in lying. “Yes. We knew each other back then.”
Alexander sniffed. “Are you a good doctor?”
“I hope so. Kaiserin Hildegarde isn’t known for having incompetent staff, and I wouldn’t want to lose my job so quickly,” Emil said, trying to joke with the boy.
“I’ll be the judge of that.”
“Yes, Your Majesty.”

“Maybe that’s why I feel so strange,” Julian said. “This place doesn’t need us— it would go on its own way without us here. We didn’t make any of it. The opposite of Iserlohn, I guess,” Julian said. He felt a sudden miserable crush of homesickness for Iserlohn. Yang was no longer there— he wasn’t even in the house he and Julian had shared on Heinessen anymore. “Iserlohn— you can really tell that it’s a place made for you. There’s nothing extraneous about it— it all just… functions.”
“That’s true. It was made for people to live in.” But there was something in Machungo’s voice that caused Julian to turn towards him.
“But?”
“This place— weren’t we made to live in it?”
“You don’t believe all that, do you?”
“In what they say? No. Not the spiritual parts.”
“Just the part where man can’t escape his destiny?”
“That’s what I believe— I don’t think they do.” He paused. “They want to tell us that man can’t escape his past.”
“But you think we can?”

Iserlohn was loud, and had the smell of a million men crammed into it. Footsteps echoed; walls creaked. It was impossible to escape the sensation of being inside something manmade, and therefore fallible.
Oberstein could recognize the irony in his own thoughts: it was strange for him to prefer the illusion of the perfection of nature, when he himself had been born one of nature’s mistakes— completely blind. If he had been an animal, a dog or a bird, he would not have survived to adulthood. But he wouldn’t have been aware of that as an injustice: it simply would have been.
It was man’s ability to understand perfection, and therefore seek it, that tended to disturb him. If Oberstein had been born a few generations earlier, when the edicts of Rudolph were still enforced, he would have been killed as an infant, to purify the human race of any genetic stain. But he had lived, which sometimes seemed only for the sake of being cognizant of that injustice.
