A bead of water dripped down from his nose, landing on the sink and absently he realized the last time he’d felt so tired had been Hamburg. Oh, little Paulie, if only you could see us now. You wouldn’t even have half a mind to know you oughtta be disappointed.

The story of Mary Mohin McCartney, from her early life on a farm in Ireland to her nursing career in Liverpool, marriage to Jim and her two children, Paul and Michael. In this universe, Mary does not die and witnesses the beginnings of her elder son's career, with mixed feelings. She has memories and an inner life her family never know of, indeed that she spends a lot of time trying not to know herself. She is first and foremost a worker, but poetry still keeps finding a way to break through.
