Summary
“Burdock. It’s a weed.” He’d clarified. Annie’s gaze narrowed inquisitively and she gave a slow nod of understanding, swallowing around the savory pastry. “You and Kimiko were so in awe over it this morning and I was just wondering if you knew it was a weed.”
“Hughie, I grew up in Iowa.” Annie had laughed, an amused crinkle creasing the corners of her eyes. “I’ve had my fair share of encounters with weeds. I know burdock’s a weed.” She shifted the weight of the bag on her arm and tucked a fair strand of hair behind her ear. “The flowers are pretty. Whether they’re weeds or not.”

Summary
“You want the truth, or do you need me to make it pretty for you?”
Hughie doesn’t want either. He wants to close the store, walk his dull walk home, and he wants to crawl into bed and dream of anything that’ll erase this moment from his mind. Yet he doesn’t say anything, paralyzed by the downturn of Butcher’s mouth and the disgusting vulnerability in the man’s eyes.
His hand twitches to reach for his pocket where he knows that vape is buried beneath his keys and a wad of tissue he’d used to dab at his runny nose. His whole body twitches towards the promise he knows Butcher’s hiding in his words.
