Summary
He was in the bedroom, and it had to be morning again. She’d spent the entire evening without him, and slept through the night. His hands wrung together involuntarily, a nervous tic—which he stopped immediately, because Camilla didn’t do that, and he was feeling a bit like an intruder, some sort of puppeteer—and he noticed her fingernails were bitten down to the skin. Nona and Pyrrha were not in the bedroom, and he was alone.

Summary
Palamedes’s abilities were undeniable; he could accelerate the healing process in the human body, something non-Grisha were unable to achieve. His mum couldn’t, Camilla’s fathers couldn’t, Kiana couldn’t…and they had all stayed in Khazovo.
If Camilla couldn’t—
(Young Ravkan friends Camilla and Palamedes discover Palamedes is Grisha, and soon their lives begin to unfold apart from one another.)

“To clarify, Warden, you want to know how the Alexandrites are prepared for deployment,” Camilla said.
“The various…strategies they might apply out-of-system, yes.” He swallowed, painfully obviously, and brushed his hand across Camilla’s waist from where he sat.
-
Palamedes wonders how the Alexandrites might utilize being attractive to diversify the Sixth's gene pool. Camilla gives him a demonstration.

Pause. What Camilla says next is hesitant, drawn out, and he knows she’s choosing her words carefully. “I have a proposition. Something that could help. If you want.”
“Well,” he says, “I’m listening. What do you have in mind?”
The next time he returns, she’s unbuttoned her shirt, leaving it open and showing the tank underneath. He can feel that she’s warm, or maybe it’s him who’s still warm from being embarrassed. The mechanical drone of the recorder echoes in his ears as he listens to Camilla’s proposal: “If the body is foreign, make it familiar to you. Learn it with your hands.”

Summary
Professor Quinn makes his way to the front of the class, taking what seems to be a deliberate path directly past Pal’s seat—or at least, that’s what he presumes, but perhaps it’s just a coincidence—
Magnus angles his head in his direction as he passes by. “Afternoon,” he says, quietly. There’s the hint of a smile at the corners of his lips, and Palamedes thinks, I’m not going to survive the semester.

Summary
"The wording of the letter comes back to her in a sickening crash of thunder and she lets her legs give out, slumping against the sink cabinet. He’d called Dulcinea so many saccharine things. Darling, and my dear girl. What exists between herself and the Warden will never be the same as that. Accept it, she thinks fiercely, and with a hot wave of anger and shame toward herself."
Camilla reads the Warden's proposal to Dulcinea for the first time.

Summary
"Palamedes shimmies around awkwardly in front of the door, putting his shirt to rights and adjusting his crooked glasses, before pulling it open. He’s not sure who he was expecting; another student, maybe, perhaps a member of the cleaning staff. He definitely was not expecting to see Magnus Quinn on the other side of that threshold."
On a research trip, one of Palamedes's professors expresses concern over his level of exhaustion - and provides a solution to help him relax.

Summary
“You said.” She can’t. She cannot. Camilla wants to say, please go back to reading your book now, please do not look at me for at least the next 36 hours, please also teach me how to make a River bubble and then kill me so I can go sit in it and stare at the wall for a long time. This is not what she says, because she doesn’t say anything, and Palamedes is unfortunately concerned.
“I said…?”
It comes out of her like she’s been punched in the chest. “You said you adored me.”

Summary
Camilla knows how his body will move before it does; there’s a split second of hesitation in him one half-step in front of her, a twist of the shoulder and tilt of the head. She lets it happen. Palamedes crowds her up against the wall, the cool brick digging into her shoulder blades, and feverishly presses his mouth to her neck—once, twice, three times—
She remembers to breathe. “Warden.”

Summary
The Warden isn’t across from her, sitting at the table in the dark. It’s quiet, no hum of other Scholars murmuring amongst themselves in the Library, no warm light emanating from sconces along the walls, casting shadows behind every bookcase. Palamedes doesn’t pack up their things and take her hand, leading her through the shelves to an isolated room he’d discovered. He doesn’t kiss her. Not now. She is alone.
It’s a good thing, Camilla tells herself, having a bitter dose of reality. It’s desperately needed, really. But she wants to go back inside her head, because it’s easier. It’s so much easier than accepting this.

Summary
Palamedes has a notebook open on his lap filled with scribblings about doors and keys and all manner of things Camilla doesn’t care much about at the moment. He’s filled up the notebook already and has taken to writing his notes in the margins, and the familiarity of it slows her heart rate just a fraction.
“Cam,” he says quietly, “come over here.”

Summary
Their interrogation attempts are ongoing and tiresome. She feels frozen in time as they grill her for intel, her mouth dry from disuse and her consciousness fading in and out around the 12th hour. They’re really dragging it out this time. Not like it’ll get them anywhere.
Her mind wanders when she’s in this chair, sometimes. It’s not hard to focus on not saying anything, and she’s well-versed in the art of appearing indifferent. So she wanders back to memories to which her soul is anchored.

And still - she keeps the letters. Each is a broken capillary. She does not read them, but she presses her fingers into them, hard.
She needs the reminder, because:
Sometimes it’s easy to forget he doesn’t belong to her in the way she belongs to him.
