“I was unaware that you and Doctor Strange had broken up,” JARVIS said, sounding concerned. At least Tony had JARVIS. JARVIS wouldn’t leave him. JARVIS didn’t think Tony was too much or not enough or somehow wrong in some way that was too intrinsic to who Tony was for Tony to ever fix it.
Tony laughed, hurting. “That’s why we’re on countdown. Doomsday incoming. Or whatever they call it. T minus 1.” One. One day. One week. Maybe they might even get as far as one month, but that was something of a stretch goal. “Want to make a bet on it, J? How long we have before Stephen calls it quits. Once I’m too much for him to stick around for.” Too much. Not enough. That was the story of Tony’s life. Why had Tony ever let himself believe that Stephen would be different than anyone else?

Summary
Stephen knew this was his time. He would fade into dust just as the others had. But it wasn't for nothing. Stark would fix this. Stark would bring everybody back in the end, like the hero he was always meant to be.
Even at such a brutal cost.
“There was no other way,” Stephen said, hoping Stark would hear what Stephen truly meant to convey — reassurance. A command not to give up, no matter how hard things might get.
And then, he waited.
And waited.
But the seconds ticked by, and he still sat there. Breathing, blinking, thinking. Why was he still here? This didn't line up with any of the outcomes he had seen. Perhaps he has misjudged the time? But his memory was better than that. He had remembered far less significant details than something like this, in situations with far less pressure.
His resignation turned to confusion as he watched the Parker boy turn to dust as well. No, this was all wrong. He was supposed to go first. What was happening? Why was it different? Everything before this had been exactly what he had seen in the future

Stephen deserved a safe harbor. For some reason, Tony was Stephen's safe harbor and Tony… Tony found he couldn't do anything except give Stephen that. No matter what that meant.
It wasn't pity. Stephen didn't need pity. For the best, pity wasn't an emotion Tony was good at, anyway.

He knows that Stephen won't hurt him, might even help him, but he isn't expecting the anger that the sorcerer displays when he explains what's happened.
