    Summary

“What if we tried it out.”
    “Pardon?”
Vi tilts the bowl down into her mouth, finishing off the rest of her food before hopping down and heading over to their medicine cabinet.
“What if,” Vi stops for a moment, struggling to find the right words, “for a month we just… tried to be a couple. See what it’s like. See if it works.”
Caitlyn watches Vi move. She watches the way Vi’s throat bobs, how she sways from the balls to the heels of her feet in contemplation and foreign anxiety. Her regular suave suddenly missing.
“And if it doesn’t?” Caitlyn leaves the door open, saying ‘if’ as opposed to ‘when’. She’s not sure whether or not it’s on purpose and if she says it for Vi’s or her own sake.
“We go back to normal,” Vi says, finally meeting Caitlyn’s eyes through her thick lashes. “It can be a funny story I tell your kids one day.” Vi finishes it off with a sweet smile. Caitlyn won’t laugh at the suggestion, Vi knows she won’t, not with the way she knows she’s looking at Caitlyn right now.
Caitlyn mulls over it, her eyebrows furrowing in concentration. Vi already wants to smooth them over.

“It's hard to see you all like this,” Caitlyn tells her finally. Vi knows she's been thinking about it this whole time.

“Then why come?” Vi asks. Not accusatory, just curious.

“I think it'd hurt more to be apart,” Cait says, her pinky twitching next to Vi’s hand on the bed. “I’d feel empty if we weren't together.”

    Summary

“You’re sweating,” Caitlyn said, the dumb things still rolling.

“Bodies are heavy,” Vi said, matter-of-factly, “but it’s halfway done.”

Vi crushed up the water bottle, put it in her pocket, and started to head back down the hallway.

“You haven’t asked me if I did it,” Caitlyn said, and the swishing of the booties stopped, the creaking of the floorboards echoing with them. The sound familiar, but Vi’s weight added meaning to it that it hadn’t held in a decade - yet still flooded Caitlyn with memories.

“I don’t care,” Vi replied, softly.

Caitlyn might have hurt someone, and Vi gets her out of it.

“…How do you know my address?”

Caitlyn paused, her expression slowly slipping into resignation. “Because… it’s my address too.”

    “So we live together.”

    “Yes.”

    “As… friends?”

“Yes,” Caitlyn insisted, her arms tightening. “As friends.”

    “Very good friends?”

Caitlyn huffed. “Well yes, I think most people who know us would say we’re very good friends.”

Vi leaned in, her voice low and conspiratorial. “Would historians say we’re very good friends?”

    Summary

“So that’s why I bring Violet Wickett up,” says the first, feminine voice, “because there’s two things that have defined Vi her entire career. How hard she plays as a forward, especially on defence, and her rivalry with Caitlyn Kiramman.”

“See, if I’m Mel Medarda, I’m not even giving Wickett another glance. I’m taking Kiramman with my first pick and grabbing from the end of the Ironfist’s bench.”

“That’s what makes this so delicious, though, Jack. Mel Medarda can get both of them.”

    Bookmarker's Notes

I'd been struggling to find a good Vi/Cait fic. This is the best. I have (or had) no knowledge about hockey prior this experience. I loved it so so much. The length per chapter. The length of chapters. The holistic take. I've read nothing like this. So much research went into this. I love the flashbacks to an earlier time. I never felt out of place. Sure, there's smut. But you have relationships, expect smut. It took me 2 days to read this completely. With going to work and working long tasking hours. I sacrificed sleep for this. It was worth it. I love them so much. More like I love the way they're portrayed here. I don't know how I found it. What combinations of inclusions v. exclusions. I really love it. All the foreshadowing. All the politics. All the background involvement. Everything. I love it. I love it. I'd read it again, and I'm not one to reread. I'd read it again. And again. Where do I find this author. Everyone loves...I love it. There's nothing to hate. There's nothing to dislike. I felt pain. I felt joy. I felt the full rainbow of emotions. About a sport that I neither play nor am familiar with aides knowledge of it's existence. This is so beautifully written. I'm jealous.
