Summary
“My papi was there,” she whispered. “My dad. He died when I was little, but he was there and I just want him back. I didn’t realize how much it still affected me. I thought I was over it, but here I am, still wishing for a dead man to come back.”
“I’m… sorry for your loss,” the older of the two said. With that, Luz tossed herself into him, wrapping her arms around him in one of those hug things. He froze for just a second before returning the gesture. “Do you… want to tell me about him?”
“I…” Luz sucked in her breath, reigning in her emotions to the best of her ability (which really wasn’t that good, but Hunter decided it wouldn’t be appropriate to comment on that). “I don’t talk about it much,” she admitted. “The first time I really talked about it was with Amity a few weeks ago. On the anniversary. He was a great dad.”

Then it occurred to him. Maybe Luz wasn’t up for it because she was afraid she’d mess up somehow. She did have a habit of spiraling into doubt about things she was good at when bad stuff happened. That, and all that scary “I don’t deserve good things” junk. Being stuck inside of Belos’s head must’ve scram-jambled something in her own.
Maybe hugging living, moving people was too much for her right now. Maybe by hugging herself, she was signaling not that she didn’t need hugs or didn’t want them, but that she needed something less overwhelming to start with. A warm-up, perhaps.
At last, King had an idea.
He got up from the couch. “I’ll be back soon, Luz,” he promised. “I’ll help you feel better, just you wait.”
She said nothing.

Summary
The moment that grimy glove made contact with her neck, Luz knew she made a mistake.
Ten minutes was the deal. Ten minutes to endure a spell designed to drain magic out of a bile sac she never had. Ten minutes to withstand the draining spell in all its intensity, and then he’d reverse it, saving all of the isles and then departing with her to the human realm as the modern day guide to the slimiest “human” that ever walked the face of the earth or the bones of the Titan.
A small part of her hoped that without magic to steal, the sigil would remain inactive, rendering Phillip’s words no more meaningful than a petty bluff.
Instead, the sigil went for the air in her lungs.

Luz's friends knew that she wasn't okay. Being back in the human realm was a rough transition for all of them.
They begin to see through the cracks in her foundation and are determined to be there for her no matter what. Even if they're not sure how.
