Summary
It's then that Wise gets his wires crossed, distracted as he is by petting Inky while running on low sleep due to his insomnia. Instead of saying "thank you" like a normal person would, when he takes the pouch from Lighter's hand, he ends up saying,
"Good boy."
Lighter freezes.
Wise blinks, eyeing the sudden pause.
Then he thinks.
And—
"Oh," he stammers, flustered. "I didn't mean—sorry, I got distracted petting Inky. I meant 'thank you', not…not that."
Wise and Lighter hang out after watching a film together in Wise's room. Shenanigans ensue.

Summary
Edward Teach and Stede Bonnet are truckers, hauling goods along the 5, the 99, and much of the west coast. They've also been hooking up here and there whenever the opportunity presents itself and have become quite close to one another. The only issue? Stede has a wife and kids at home and not a lot of will to leave.
-----
"Stede could practically feel a line being crossed, a tide turning. Arranging phone calls just wasn’t a done thing for casual fucks. For good friends, sure, and Ed was the best friend he’d ever had, probably, but this wasn’t just to catch up or shoot the shit— this was because they missed each other, missed the cozy little bubble of intimacy they’d built up over the months, missed making the other laugh and then moan in the same breath. This was something new.
