Summary
When Tony meets Sergeant James Barnes, he knows his life will never be the same again. Falling in love is dangerous while in the middle of a war, especially when society refuses to accept love between two men, but they're helplessly drawn to each other. Every second they share is precious beyond words, even more so because Tony knows that Bucky might not return to him one day. Tony isn't sure if he'll survive losing Bucky.
When Bucky falls, Tony feels like he dies with him. What point is there to keep on living when Bucky isn't there? But, despite the loss and grief, Tony does survive. He's not sure why he soldiers on, year after year, considering how pointless it feels. He knows he'll never get to see Bucky again.
Until one day, seventy years into the future, he does.

Tony's blood rushed to his ears, blocking out Steve’s worried mumbles and Natasha and Sam’s reassurances. It hadn’t been an easy retrieval mission, physically or emotionally, and they were still dealing with the consequences of Hydra’s actions.
He felt Rhodey shift beside him and saw Rhodey’s mouth move, but there was no sound.

At first it had just been compulsive self-denial: you can’t eat until you’ve drafted your opening remarks, until you’ve finished your research, until you’ve rewritten every last colon and comma and apostrophe in those Accords so that everyone can come home.
Those goals had been realistic. Lately, they’d become impossible. Until everyone forgives you. Until you forgive yourself. Until you make up for every bad thing you’ve ever caused.
He was fine. He was coasting in a dangerous place, but he was fine. He wasn't taking it too far - just far enough.

Tony wasn’t quite sure how he’d gotten here, here being tied to a chair with a cut above his eye releasing a steady stream of blood down his face. His ribs hurt and he was at least 87% sure that his left knee was broken. When he flexed it gently the pain was almost unbearable. Okay, make that 99% sure. It was without a doubt broken - which would have been 100%. Fuck; his brain was broken now too, as well several of as his fingers. To be honest, his ankles didn’t feel great either.
How the fuck had he ended up here?
Sure, he’d always known that Bucky Barnes wasn’t the angel Tony wanted to believe that he was, but he definitely hadn’t known it was going to lead him here.

Summary
Tony is practically an expert on nightmares. He has been dealing with them for a long time now and has had time to control his reactions to them. This didn't extend to the other Avengers though, who had their own specific horrors that trapped them in their sleep. It was a natural decision for Tony to be the one to see them through such times. If only he made sure that they knew about this too, because sometimes taking care of your family could mean damaging yourself. In the end, it falls on the team to see through this and hope to bring Tony out of his own horrors.
