    Summary

Daniel is sprawled out across the bed, loose-limbed and lazy, somehow filling all the open space it has to offer and leaving Armand to nestle into the gaps. His cheeks are flushed, blood pooling like it knows what comes next. Maybe it does. Armand was reading about classical conditioning the other day. About dogs who become accustomed to getting food when their handler rings a bell.

Perhaps Daniel is the dog, Armand’s teeth sharp bells reverberating in his veins. Or perhaps Armand is the dog, Daniel’s blood a song rattling in his ears. He has been a dog before. He runs his tongue along the bow of Daniel’s collarbone, gathers the salt-sweat there and imagines what it tastes like because Daniel does.

Armand remembers he loved Daniel, once, and that Daniel loved him. Or a version of them did, at least. It isn't his intention to go back to that, but it's not not his intention, either. Such is the prerogative of an immortal: to hold two contradicting desires simultaneously. If nothing else, it passes the time while he waits for this miserable interview to end.

    Summary

“The picture we found,” Shahara says quickly, before they can start arguing. “With you and Defoe.” Posed together as lovers at first glance but on second inspection, with Defoe rather obviously already dead and Hillinghead seemingly out of his mind. It'd sent a chill down Shahara's spine.

“They used it to convict me. For killing Defoe and being a...” Alfred trails off, his eyebrows furrowing like he's considering different words he could use and thinking better of all of them.

The corner of Karl's lip twitches up but Shahara silences him with a firm gesture of the hand.

“A homosexual?” she offers and Alfred nods, slow and solemn.

“They were wrong,” Iris says, sharp but not unkind. She should know, she's the one who shot Defoe that one time.

“Well,” Alfred says. He puts his hands on the table, squares his shoulders. “They were wrong about me killing Defoe.”

“I am psychic,” Nicky says, and for a split second, Nile thinks he’s serious, that he can actually read her mind. It certainly wouldn’t be the weirdest thing she’s seen in the last couple of months.

Then Nicky tilts his head and amends, “When it comes to Yusuf.”

    Summary

"We killed each other. Many times."

July, 1099. The First Crusade. The Siege of Jerusalem. Yusuf is trapped in the city, a volunteer soldier to help defend it against invading Crusaders. Nicoló arrived in June with a group of Genoese sailors, a volunteer priest-turned-soldier to claim Jerusalem in a holy war. Their roles in this conflict would be easier if they could sleep well, but both have uncomfortable dreams, dreams of strangers, dreams that must be an omen, drawing them together. Perhaps to kill each other, or perhaps for some other, unexplainable purpose.
