“The maple leaves in Ritou have turned red,” Heizou says. "Every year, they turn red, and I think of you.” He wipes at a drying tear on Kazuha's cheek.
A fresh bead of water catches on Kazuha's bottom lashes.
“When you leave here, the maple leaves will fall, and I will think of you everyday until they grow back, until they grow red again, and by then… by then I hope, instead of seeing red maple leaves on the trees, I’ll see them on you. On your beautiful haori, in your red hair and red eyes. In your name, when I call it.”

After the loss of his family, his friend, and his nation, shattered pieces of who Kazuha used to be pull him in directions he no longer knows how to navigate. A life of wandering now feels like an existence with no grounding, and he's spinning. He's a fugitive, an exile, unwanted by a nation that he, too, no longer believes in.
