In the end, perhaps Varka found himself in this predicament by underestimating Flins. He shouldn't have. It is far from the first time the Lightkeeper has flipped the script on him.
So Varka stares, bewildered, as the most beautiful man in the room gives invaluable insight to the meeting, while keeping his hand on him like it’s nothing.
Varka’s nails dig into his palm. He’s survived far more difficult situations than this one, hasn’t he?

Flins rereads these words in Varka's near-incomprehensible scribble. He hears them in Varka's voice. He sees Varka's smile. Feeling his mouth curl upwards in spite of himself, Flins wonders when Varka will tire of asking questions to which he already knows the answers.
After a run-in with Flins at the lighthouse, Varka suggests they write letters to each other to stay in touch. Their friendship grows into something much larger than either of them had initially imagined.

Summary
“Any challenge is a worthwhile endeavor,” Varka replies. “But if you’re worried about being fair or giving me a handicap…” Flins certainly hadn’t said that, but now he’s curious, and he grows more curious as Varka withdraws a scrap of fabric from one pocket. “Play blindfolded.”
The challenge whets Flins’s appetite. He isn’t the kind of fae who exults in games of chance but rather ones of wit and strategy, and he was fond of collecting intelligent men like glittering baubles at the Belyi Tsar’s court. “If I am to handicap myself, then I should receive a greater reward if I win, don’t you think?” he asks, the words out of his mouth before he can help them, for he, like all fae, loves a bargain.
When a bad storm strands Varka at Flins's lighthouse, the two play chess to pass the time. After beating Varka twice, Flins agrees to play with a blindfold, provided the loser owe the winner a boon.

The sake cup makes no sound as Yaichi sets it down on the low-lying table.
He leans back on his left arm with unintentional grace. "You came," he tells Masa, the light from a lantern at the room's corner flickering on his face.
Masa blinks at him from below the door frame before he carefully enters this space, Yaichi's space, and feels pressure on his rib cage the moment he slides the thin door shut. "You asked for me," he mumbles, sitting opposite of him.
