Summary
As Song Lan leaves Yi city as a resurrected, sentient corpse, with two spirit-trapping pouches and an extra sword strapped to his back, he does so without any particular plan of where to go. The only thought thrumming through his mind is that he must go, get away, get as far away from this horrible place as he possibly can. It becomes a journey in more ways than one, as Song Lan grieves and remembers a time long since gone by, all the while trying to heal the two souls in his care and desperately trying to find the strength to go on.
This is a story told in parts, the thread of Song Lan's journey intertwined with both the thread of Song Lan's and Xiao Xingchen's history as their relationship takes shape, and the thread of Xiao Xingchen's soul in the afterlife. There is grief, guilt and pain, but also a whole lot of first times, of learning to overcome fears and to trust. It is a story about love, about letting go and what it means to go on, but most of all, a story about home.

- those poignant lines and details that make you have to look away for a moment and sob
- i thought the 3 interwoven storylines worked beautifully and (therefore) made it all hurt worse. having a xxc’s soul pov is galaxy brain-level angst writing
- good characterization which is rare for songxiao, all the canon aspects of their personalities are present plus the parts we didnt get to see without anything being over-exaggerated
- didnt realize this was rated M and not G until too late but i just scrolled quickly to give them some privacy hhhhh
- takes the saddest arc of mdzs and brings every glass shard of pain out into the light to examine it before stabbing it through the reader’s heart :) -

- incredibly well written
- phenomenal 3zun characterization (esp given somewhat-unreliable narrator jgy)
- makes me forget what is and isnt canon in the best way
- cried at least twice per chapter
- yeah there’s sex but it works to solidify characterizations among other intricate things (tbh i think i cried during most of the sex scenes)
- cant fully express how much i adore/was emotionally injured by/recommend this work
