Wasted enough time?” Mary releases her hold on Arthur’s arm, only to cradle his face in both of her hands. She traces her thumb over his cheek, delighting in the flush that blooms across his skin. Arthur swallows thickly, lips parted, pupils blown in an expression Mary knows from her years as a wife. Arthur has to close his eyes again before he can speak, voice pained.
“Nothin’s changed, Mary. I ain’t changed, nor have you. The problems are still there and they ain’t goin’ away, you know that. What good would it do? What’s the point of it all? Of lettin’ ourselves have that, only to lose it?”
“It’s already lost, Arthur. I just want one night with you; I can’t watch you leave again, not without a piece of you to take with me. Please, Arthur, just one night. Forget the rest of it, all of it."
