The corner of Lottie’s mouth curls upwards, showing her crooked tooth. “I’ll do my best.”
She holds out her right hand, waiting. Nat reaches out and takes it, and there: an agreement reached by words, bound by skin. Down the hall, across sun-drenched tiling, the shadows of tree branches stretch out like antlers below them.

“At least there’s one good thing about this dumb show,” Fatin adds. Her tone is lighter now, the pitch of amusement. “The actor they picked to play you is, like, insanely hot.”
There’s a flash of something low in Leah’s stomach, red-hued and braided with envy; she frowns, bothered in a way she can’t quite explain. There’s definitely no sulkiness in her voice, not even a little bit, when she says: “Eh, she’s not that great.”
“Well, she’s a low three compared to the real thing,” Fatin agrees easily, knocking her shoulder against Leah’s. “But I’ll take what I can get.”

The plate of risotto rests on the table between them, perfect except for one missing spoonful. Leah’s still looking at her, waiting for the verdict; Fatin suddenly, overwhelmingly doesn’t know how to do this.
It’s incredible, she wants to say. You’re incredible. You, you, you. I’ve been all around the culinary world, been Michelin fucking starred, and I’ve never met a better sous than the one sitting across from me right now. Sometimes I think a meal prepared by your hands is the only thing that’s ever cured my hunger.
“Yeah,” she says finally. “That’s fire, chef.”
