During my long life with Sherlock Holmes, I have often seen him in terrible danger. Once, I had grieved him for three long years, and other times I had feared him lost for thankfully much shorter periods. The life of a consulting detective was a perilous one, no matter how much we enjoyed pursuing cases together.
Perhaps somewhat naively, I had assumed that our quiet, intimate retirement would be free of dangers.
