“Dead.” Tommy steps fearlessly in front of George, glowering at him. “Why? What’s it to you, longlegs?”
George laughs, lowering his head to look Tommy in the eye. “Oh, spicy. You’re not like your brother at all.”
“Yeah? Wanna see how spicy I can get?” Tommy says, baring his teeth. “If you don’t leave my brother alone, I’ll go ghost pepper on your flat ass.”

“I’ve been thinking,” Wilbur continues, because he finds it easy to monologue, apparently, “that you could come and meet my family.”
It doesn’t sound completely terrible, and Tommy trusts Wilbur. He's never led Tommy wrong before (with the exception of the jellybean fiasco at the fair, which Tommy will not be forgiving). But Wilbur’s family isn’t Wilbur. Who knows if Tommy can trust them? What if they take one look at his collar and ship him back to his owners? It’s what a responsible adult would do.
Tommy hates responsible adults.
Tommy, a feral werewolf pup, is adopted by a pack; this goes against all of his best laid plans.

“It’s your soulmates, baby,” his mother whispered. “They’re not here yet. You’re missing them.”
Phil knew about soulmates, of course, like he knew about dogs and flowers and the sun. He just didn’t understand how he could miss someone he’d never even met. It wasn’t fair. But, fair or not, the feeling persisted. On the good days it was like an itch he could never reach, or a limb he couldn’t fully stretch—nagging, but manageable.
On the bad days he wanted to scream and cry and smash his fists against the walls.
