Gideon has two priorities for the weekend: having a lovely time cuddling with her girlfriend Cam, and befriending Cam's shy orange cat. Not necessarily in that order.

The first time Camilla Hect takes a life is an accident, but she can’t truthfully say that she didn’t mean to do it.
It becomes a habit, of sorts.

Summary
I found myself thinking of you often, Kiana. I know that’s silly, so please do not chide me; we’ve never met, though we've been writing for years, and sometimes I feel I may not even know you at all. Your every letter is guarded and solemn, and I know that’s probably just how you are, but sometimes I wish I could see your face. I’d like to know if I’ve ever written anything that pleased you or made you smile.
I must have stared at that page for half an hour, and reread it at least fifteen times. Dulcinea was twenty and I was twenty-three, and nothing about this was inappropriate on its face, but something started twisting in my gut a little bit the more I thought of it.
I didn’t reply to that letter for a long time.
Dulcinea Septimus writes to Palamedes and Camilla. She also writes to Kiana. This produces a set of complicated emotions and interpersonal dynamics that no child of the Sixth wants to parse.

To his credit, the Warden didn’t look confused to see me. He didn’t even look surprised.
“I thought they might start pairing us in exams,” he said.

shovel talk (in f major) by waydownhadestown

Summary
To call it a conversation probably is technically correct, but it's probably correct mostly on that technicality. Most onlookers would likely favor a different descriptor—lecture, perhaps, or monologue, with occasional interjections. Perhaps an onlooker with a particularly keen or nasty sense of humor might even arrive at the term shovel talk, although that’s really not quite accurate. If anything, it’s a sort of inverted shovel talk, one in which the mother seems to be expending quite a deal of effort attempting to convince the third party that said third party’s time and effort is, quite frankly, better spent on almost anything other than looking to the well-being of her son—
“Archivist,” Camilla Hect interjects. “The ceremony is tomorrow.”
The night before Camilla officially becomes Palamedes’ cavalier, she and the Archivist have a discussion. It doesn’t go the way the Archivist was hoping.

“Why fish flakes?” Pyrrha asked conversationally. Camilla had the decency to look a little abashed. She rolled her shoulders and said, “Thought it might disguise the burnt taste.”
