Summary
“You sure everything's good?” Bucky raised his eyebrow and Gale felt like someone dropped a stone in his belly.
“Yeah. Don't worry about me, really. I'm fine. I will be fine.”
OR Gale puts himself in harm's way so no one else gets hurt.

His smile is wide, a little dark, a little conspiratorial. “No, I think you push me around just fine as is. And without so much as a promise ring.”
The toothpick in his mouth reminds Gale not to bite down. “Watch yourself, Bucky.”

Summary
Jean was not sure how he got roped into watching a child. Actually, he knew exactly how he got roped into spending his afternoon with the little creature, and that reason was sitting in front of him, bouncing the small thing on his knee.
Jeremy made nonsensical noises to the thing as it squealed with joy. He held the child just beneath its armpit, bouncing his knee up and down where the child sat. Another delighted shriek came from the little one at the movement. It was the only way they had found to quiet the child, when its little gasps had turned to wails after its parents were gone.
“It is very easily entertained,” Jean observed, standing across the living room and watching.
Jeremy’s smile, which he turned on Jean, could have rivaled the sun. “Isn’t he adorable? I’m telling Cat I will watch him every day if she needs it.”

Summary
“Well?” Jean challenged, bold enough to make something in Jeremy’s chest race. “You told me to do it before. It’s your turn.”
Jeremy had told Jean, once, that crying was healthy.
He was a hypocrite. He knew that. The idea of having Jean find out, though, made Jeremy’s stomach churn. “I’m good.”
“You are not.”
Or, Jeremy has an anxiety attack and Jean doesn't leave him alone.

Summary
I could marry Svetlana.
A noise built in his head. A steady, growing sound—and the more he thought about what had just happened, the harder it became to hear anything else.
Another rush of noise pulsed behind his eyes. He twisted the tap to icy cold and splashed his face—the same water he’d praised not long ago, feeling sheepish and suddenly not knowing what to say. But they didn’t need words anymore. He’d thought so.
His head felt ready to burst. He cupped a handful of water and poured it over his neck, gasping involuntarily. He stood there wet and shaking, water soaking through his shirt. He hated it. He hated how sticky it felt, how it clung to his burning skin—hated it as much as he’d hated that godawful ad shoot where they kept pouring water over him and touching him—
“Shane?” Ilya’s voice cut through the noise, both in his head and through the bathroom door.
Leave me alone.
“Shane, are you okay?”
Please leave me alone. Please do it now so it doesn’t hurt later.

Summary
“You read New Yorker, yes?” Ilya says, a little awkwardly, alone in the room with David Hollander. He tries to finish his drink, but it’s either hard to want to or very necessary right now after that double exit, the look on Shane’s face mirroring the one on his mother’s, and he shouldn’t feel quite so surprised at how easily he can recognize Yuna Hollander’s tightness because of course he can, it’s just Shane’s in a different shape and Ilya Rozanov has spent a lifetime shaping himself around other people’s feelings, when to comfort and when to get out of the way or just take the backhand, when to laugh and when to smirk and when to spit, when to skate away and when to take the gloves off.
Ilya and David talk while Shane and Yuna are outside.
