Jonathan hadn't really believed him. He'd heard about how smoking just makes some people paranoid, and he had been sure he'd be one of those types. He'd insisted they try it in his bedroom, because if things went wrong he didn't want to be in some unfamiliar location convinced that the government was after him. In Jonathan's defense, the government has often been after him.

He had long daydreamed about it. Getting stabbed by a tentacle or shot by a soldier, he had it all planned in his head. He would lay there bloody surrounded by his loved ones, he would finally be vulnerable. Say all the things he never could because none of it would matter anyways. He wanted it so bad. He just wanted a chance to say everything that sat so heavy on his chest.
He wanted to look up into Dustin’s eyes and tell him he was the best friend he had ever had. His little brother. He wanted to hold Robin’s hand and tell her that she meant the world to him. But most of all he wanted to hold onto Jonathan as he told him he loved him.
