Well, that wasn’t exactly true. The basic truth itself could be summed up real easy: that guy right there is me from the future and that’s his pal Sam, also from the future. All the details and the questions afterwards - only half of which got actual answers - that’s what really took so long.
When a version of himself from the future is brought back to the past right in front of him suddenly HYDRA isn't the most interesting thing in this war. But the more time Bucky spends with himself and the new companion who came with him, the more questions he finds himself with. How much time has really passed? How much can one man be changed from himself? Who is this Sam - and what will he grow to mean to Bucky?

From this angle, Mariana is a good two or three inches taller than him, and Charlie can see every imperfection in his face. The black beauty mark pressed cutely beneath his left eye. The faded pockmarks skimming his cheeks like old stars. One stray eyelash tumbling down his cheekbone, stuck there.
Mindlessly, he reaches a finger out to brush it away. Mariana stills under his touch, breath heating the pads of his thumb. Dizzily, Charlie recalls that the clock ticks somewhere, but he’s too far underwater to hear it.
“There,” he says, lifting the eyelash up to Mariana’s lips. “Make a wish.”
They hold eye contact for what seems like years, two bodies just barely on the edge of touching in an empty laundromat. Quiet and sacred and altogether beautiful.
Maybe being in love isn’t too bad.

He would really appreciate it if she would turn right back around and do what she does best. Leave. He wouldn't be mad, not this time. It'd be an act of kindness.
