    Summary

Lan Wangji is a classical cellist at the conservatoire. She does not have time for distractions. She doesn't have space in her carefully structured and planned life for flautist girls from the university who run late to orchestra rehearsal and wink at her and try to make her go to the pub, and she certainly can't afford to spend her thoughts replaying Wei Wuxian telling her her name, and the way her mouth fell loose around the sound of it.

But what if she wants to?

    Summary

One for sorrow, two for joy,
Three for a girl, four for a boy,
Five for silver, six for gold,
Seven for a secret never to be told.

Little ficlet character studies of the seven birds, mostly during Stolen Century, inspired by this traditional magpie rhyme because it fits them so beautifully.

    Summary

Evandrin, the most magnificent man in the world, is looking at him like he’s a wonder greater than every last thing in the city he protects. A long second passes with Zerxus kneeling before him, hands resting on his legs, while they stare into each other’s eyes, both burning with desire and admiration.

But Zerxus isn’t done yet. From a dresser he brings a comb and some oil and settles himself behind Evandrin on the bed. Now that they’re warmed up, he can feel the heat radiating from Evandrin’s skin, but they’re not touching, as much as Zerxus wants them to be. First, he’s going to revel in being the one to serve the man who serves everyone else.

    Summary

He’d asked Evandrin what it was like to fly, to soar through the sky. To wake up each day, look from your window and see clouds melting and billowing around your home.

Evandrin’s answer was to summon his wonderful griffon Caelus, made of space and stars and darkness, to climb onto his back with an easy, practiced motion, and reach out his hand to Zerxus to help him up as well.

And up, and up, and up, until the spire of the city lay below them no bigger than a bottle and they crested the clouds, until they were higher than the birds chirring in their flocks towards the horizon and there was nothing at all between them and the sun, where Caelus stretched out his wings and coasted on the thermals as serenely as Avalir travelled suspended on the energy of the ley lines of Exandria, and it was quiet, so quiet, no sound but for the wind whistling through Evandrin’s hair and the beat of Zerxus’ own heart in his chest where it was pressed tight to Evandrin’s back. To sit in the sphere of the firmament was everything Zerxus had ever imagined – except that his mind could not have conjured a man so wonderful as the one who had brought him there.

(Or, how exactly Zerxus met Evandrin.)

    Summary

“I gotta say, I did not miss the morning miles,” Riley says, looking back at all the distance they’ve walked.

“Well, that’s just cause you’re slow,” Ellie teases.

“That is so not true. I’m faster than you.”

    “Prove it,” Ellie says, cocky.

Riley stops walking, catching Ellie’s hand to stop her too. She looks down at her from all that height and Ellie has to catch her breath.

“Okay,” says Riley, and she takes off like a bullet.

“Hey, no fair!” Ellie bolts after her but she’s taller and older and stronger. With the headstart she doesn’t stand a chance, all she can do is scramble behind Riley and watch her jacket flapping as she races down the full length of the mall, following her steps without thinking about where it’ll take them, chasing her as she laughs like a maniac.

My take on the rest of what happened at the mall.

    Summary

“Are you ready for the greatest experiment to ever grace our collective brains?”

Barry swallowed. “I mean, what would you say are the chances of something going disastrously wrong? Or otherwise blowing up.” Lup opened her mouth but he held up a hand before she could speak. “And yes, that’s accounting for the fact that we on average have a higher likelihood of exploding things than the general population.”

“Mm, I love it when you call us outliers,” said Lup. “But I’m not even doing mine tonight, so that drops the chances by a fair few points, I’d say.”

“Oh,” said Barry. “That’s true. I’m on my own this time.”

“Babe!” Lup said, twirling around, mildly offended. “I would never leave you to fend for yourself. Tonight,” and she bowed dramatically, her long scarf almost scraping the ground, “you have – and this is official - the greatest chef in existence serving as your humble sous-chef.”

“Okay, so if anything blows up it’s definitely still your fault.”

“Well, you know what I always say…” She waltzed towards the store.

“It’s not Candlenights until something’s on fire?”

    Summary

    “Wait, hang on a second.”

    “What’s up?”

“I’ve never been ice skating before. I don’t know how to do it.”

“Oh!” Dani said. “Well, I mean we don’t have to, I just thought it would be cool…”

Aubrey swept in and gave Dani another kiss on the cheek. The part of her face that was visible beneath scarves and hats flushed pink, and Aubrey grinned.

“No, this is such a good idea,” she said. “I’m just warning you now, I miiiight have to hold your hand a lot. You know, for balance and stuff.”

“How will I cope?” said Dani, pushing open the heavy swinging door of the ice rink.

“Don’t pretend this wasn’t your plan the whole time.”

“My devious ploy has been discovered,” Dani said dryly.

Dani takes Aubrey on an ice skating date. Aubrey doesn't know how to skate. Epic hand holding ensues.

    Summary

It’s cosy and dim in Hollis’s room, the only light coming from a lamp on the table and flickering from the TV, where the Sochi Olympics is just getting going for the day.
    “Spit it out,” says Hollis.
“I-” Keith starts, then looks down, and then determinedly back at the screen. This is fucking ridiculous. He regularly does shit that could kill him just for the kicks, and he can’t just say a few words.
Hollis is waiting for them though, and Keith really, really just wants his best friend to know.

    Summary

“Are you receiving? I'm not here to fight, I have a message for the Resistance, we're not fighting, we... need your help.” The words taste bitter. She had never thought she'd come to this. Begging.

The comms hiss. “What kind of help?”

Fucking impatient. Doray gracefully settles her sleek fighter among the battered freighters and cruisers before deigning to reply.

“This is Flight Officer Doray Ourls, formerly of the Final Order. My captain and her stormtrooper platoons request your assistance in battling those whose loyalties remain... unchanged.”

When Captain Majod sends ace TIE pilot Doray to the Resistance with a message, Finn's more than happy to help fellow ex-stormtroopers off Exegol (but really he just needs a moment to talk to Rey).

Poe's been fighting for so long that this little bit more shouldn't be hard, but he's barely managing to keep going.

And Rey is still reeling from all she's learned and seen, afraid of her own power and uncertain of what to do next.

It's time to finish the war. To get through this, they have to have each other's backs. Easier said than done, when they're all being pulled in different directions and every day brings a new fight.

    Summary

Baze had said once that he liked water – oceans and rivers and lakes, anything that made you feel. He thought it was a product of growing up in the middle of an island, when every direction pulled you to the sea, an innate love and fascination for a place you'd never seen but were surrounded by. An inevitability, or something.

Well. What he'd actually said was, “I like the canal.” Chirrut had managed to infer the rest from that.

    Summary

“I thought he was dead once before,” says Finn to the silent room. “When we crashed on Jakku, and I couldn’t find him, and I wrote him off. And he was alive!” They all still look so exhausted. He tries again. “It’s the same now! He’ll turn up here in, what, two weeks?” Still, it’s only blank faces. He doesn’t believe this. “Come on! You’re telling me you honestly believe that Poe Dameron, the greatest pilot in the Republic, could ever be the only casualty of a routine mission? And look,” he smiles, laying down his trump, “he promised me. Okay? He promised me that he would come back. He’s coming back.” Finn leans against the wall. “He’s coming back.”

The only sound in the room is Dula, sobbing into their hands.

    Summary

"We wanted out, no matter what," Finn says. "Or, I know I did, at least. He never made it off that fucking planet to tell me.”

Poe is speechless, a rare occurrence. “I’m sorry,” he eventually manages.

Finn closes his eyes. “It wasn’t your fault.”

“No,” insists Poe, and he sits up, forcing Finn to do the same, frowning at his boyfriend.

“Poe?” and he’s worried now. Poe doesn’t like it when Finn is worried, and he’s normally ready to relieve him with reassurance and a smile and a joke. This time, though, his mouth feels numb and the words aren’t coming out.

“Poe, whatever’s wrong, just tell me, babe. It’s okay.”

“I think I killed him,” Poe blurts out.

    "Heaven," Finn repeated.

"Heaven," Poe agreed, stroking Finn's hair. "Did they not teach you about it in Trooper School?"

    "No," Finn said.
