But the bad is certainly there, and with it is the dawning knowledge that Wolfwood has no right to be standing at Vash’s side, even if he hasn’t killed a single person since the fall of July, even if he has no intentions of ever doing so again, outside of the few situations where it can’t be avoided. He does not have the right to stand by Vash, but that’s where he wants to be, and Vash hasn’t told him to leave yet, so he stays.
Wolfwood does not, however, touch him. Even when Vash looks at him with recognition, smiles and says his name and reminds Wolfwood of how it feels to be acknowledged with so much tenderness, Wolfwood keeps his hands to himself. He’d spent years fantasising about this reunion, how it would go, what he would do. Whether he would grab Vash by the shirt or smack him in the face or hug him and not let go—he’s gone over it all, in the privacy of his own mind. And he keeps his grubby paws to himself, when it comes down to it, because the fantasies alone should be enough, and even if they aren’t, that too is a sting that Wolfwood deserves.
