Summary
Five years to the day, it finally feels like life’s starting to click into place for Vanta. He’s working on the big projects, people actually return his emails, and he’s developed a respectable ability to feign interest in quarterly reports. He likes to think he’s managed to hold himself to the breakup that took him down this career path being safely tucked in the past, where it belongs.
So when he runs into Freodore on the set of a movie he's working on too, he tells himself it’s all water under the bridge. Convinced he’s grown into the kind of adult who can make peace and be friends, he tries. He really does. Except Vanta’s still maybe a little more than weak to the gravitational pull of being in Freodore’s orbit, a lot more than he’d like to think.

Reassured, Kaelix hands the ID back with a grin. "Thanks! I hope you have a pleasant evening at By The Beat, Mr. Willerton."
For some reason, Yuki Willerton grimaces. He steps into Kaelix's space, tapping his arm with the back of a knuckle. Puzzled, Kaelix leans down, close enough for Yuki Willerton to whisper in his ear, "Listen, I know that this isn't the most thorough disguise, but I'd really appreciate it if you could keep it a little more… subtle."
Ah fuck, Kaelix thinks, distressed. Yu Q. Wilson really is at my live house.
Or; Kaelix Debonair, bouncer of By The Beat and vice-president of the unofficial Yu Q. Wilson fanclub, is really normal and totally chill when his favourite hero visits his live house for the night.

“If you win—” Freo's voice breaks off, then he swallows hard. “If you win you can put it in. Later.”
Kaelix’s breath catches. That spark in his chest flares bright. He hadn’t been sure how he’d play. He still isn’t. But he wants to win more now than he ever has. It’s Freo’s last season and Kaelix wants him to see it, to know how good he can be and remember him this way.
“And if you win?” Kaelix asks, barely able to keep his voice steady.
“If I win,” Freo says, “No sex until finals are over.”

They had never been so physically close to each other before, usually an appropriate, modest amount of space padding them at all times, but now. Now, Kaelix could scarcely think.
He made no attempt to make space between them.
Freodore, too, made no attempt to make space between them.

Or: Kaelix is only a lowly palace guard, and Freodore is the beautiful royal designer and master of the wardrobe with whom Kaelix is enamored, and who just might think fondly of Kaelix, too.

Summary
Kaelix finally lands a job after a streak of rejections, and it’s suspiciously well-paid for something that mostly involves lifting furniture, organizing samples, and not getting distracted by his frustratingly attractive boss.
He can handle it. He can show up every day and totally not make it weird.
He can also fall headfirst into a hole of his own making. One that involves getting a little bit too attached, catching feelings he knows he really shouldn’t, and falling harder than he ever meant to.
