“Do you need help?” Hannibal asks slowly, looking at Will’s crumpled figure on the carpet, sprawled out amongst the papers.
“Do you?” Will counters. Hannibal’s eyes flicker, only for a moment, before returning to his facade, the lump in his throat growing as the seconds tick by.
“It’s not becoming to not answer questions, Will.”
“And it’s not ‘becoming’ for you to omit them altogether.” Will grits, crushing the paper in his hand.

Summary
Canon diverges at the end of S03 E07, "Digestivo"
After Will's rejection, Hannibal nearly gives himself up to the FBI. Fortunately, Chiyoh talks him out of it. Aspects of the idea had merit, and he's confident there are other ways to bring Will the rest of the way out of his chrysalis.

Will is living by rote in the empty shell of his old life. A visit from Hannibal, a final farewell, doesn't give him the closure he hopes for, and when the Ripper starts killing anew in Arizona, Will can't refuse the call.

Pushed from his train and relying on a hallucinated stag to lead him to Florence, Will is drawn up short when he reaches a junction and his guide disappears.
The path he chooses leads him to the right place, but entirely the wrong time.
...Or: Will needs pre-med Hannibal's help, and has to avoid becoming Il Monstro's latest art project without revealing the truth of their relationship.

"I never said I was innocent, Christ, you're dense," Daniil breathed. His trousers were too tight; it was all too many layers of fabric, dulling the contact that should've been overwhelming until it was only teasing, just enough stimulation to drive him insane. "I'm not feigning anything, and I'm not wrong. You're the one who broke my nose and then mounted me like a feral animal, wouldn't you say that's depraved? Hell, you're lucky I'm even allowing this, knowing your bloody track record."
Artemy snickered into Daniil's ear. "It's not broken, don't be dramatic. Your pretty face will be just fine."
