Jimmy had considered that perhaps their run-in earlier in the month was just a bad dream: collateral of his fucked-up psyche, all jaded and depraved from the isolation of these past few months. A burn mark from the ash of his cigarette had lingered on his wrist for a week afterwards, though, embedding the reality of it all within his skin like a brand.
Gary is back. The thought hangs at the back of Jimmy’s head, a mantra. He’s back.

No jittery fingers drumming the desk. No restless leg bouncing under the seat. Just calm, deliberate movements as the guy turned a page in his notebook, pen moving in neat, controlled strokes.

The guy turned his head slightly to the side and Jimmy’s stomach dropped. That scar on his eyebrow.
