Jiang Xiaoshuai is beautiful in the candlelight. He always is, but the flames turn his skin a warm gold that makes Guo Chenyu’s mouth water. The low light makes him seem softer, too. It takes away some of the rough, sharp edges that he always throws up between them.

“What do you think, doctor? Am I pretty now?” Guo Chengyu asks again, batting his eyes, shamelessly flirting in front of the entire waiting room. It sounds like a joke, self deprecating and silly, but Jiang Xiaoshuai can feel the heat in his gaze. This is a thing Guo Chengyu does often — behaving outrageously to hide his feelings in plain sight, folding his desires up in humor, using plausible deniability as a safety net.
“The prettiest,” Jiang Xiaoshuai replies, adding a soft, sweet little smile that he knows no one else can see from where he’s standing.
He raises his phone to take a photo just in time to catch Guo Chengyu’s flustered expression at the unexpected praise. “See? Red is definitely your color.”
In which Jiang Xiaoshuai puts his man in satin and red lipstick and tells him he's pretty. Because if you thought I was just going to let that, "my parents raised me as a daughter" one-liner evaporate into the aether unaddressed, then you've clearly never met me.
