A spark of eagerness flits through him when Chu Wanning looks up through the dark building to catch sight of him approaching. He looks soft like this, much closer to his husband than Mo Ran has seen yet in the mirror. His thin pink lips part in surprise and his eyebrows rise into soft arcs.
“Mo Ran?” He asks quickly shoving himself to his feet. His boots are halfway across the room at the table he clearly intended to sit at but never made it back to. He hurries towards Mo Ran in his little white socks making no sound. “What’s wrong? Why are you back?”
“I…” Mo Ran starts. His mouth is dry. He thought about what he’d say as he searched for Chu Wanning. He wants to say, I wanted to say goodbye. I needed to wish you a happy new year and tell you to stay safe while we’re away, but it’s not what he says. Instead, he stupidly says, “...was worried about my core traveling, and was hoping you’d be willing to help stabilize it.”
