Companionship isn't a necessity, such as: food, water, and shelter. The Infected roam, seeking to consume and spread their virus, and the few people left alive aren't often of good character. Levi has done well for himself as a lone survivor, but an odd man takes to trailing him around, forcing him into an entanglement he didn't ask for.
In post-apocalyptic Japan, they make a connection that allows them to do more than survive — with each other, Levi and Erwin live.
