A lot of people describe love as fire, as flame.
Unsurprisingly, it’s never sat well with him. Fire is dangerous. It hurts people, ruins lives, destroys things. He likes putting them out, likes saving people from them, likes finding something salvageable in the ash.The first time he saw Esther, it wasn’t fire or flame or spark. Charging into smoke and heat in the Clinton Hill Chantry, seeing her there in the halls was fresh air, was a spring breeze.
Ricky’s had crushes before, Ricky’s been in love before, but it’s always felt like those things have just happened to him. He hasn’t ever wanted anyone, not the way that he’s wanted Esther.
