Summary
Despite one’s best efforts, attempting to prevent an outcome does not always lead to success. Even a wholehearted attempt can land one precisely where one does not wish to be. Even if that outcome is generally far better than others that could have arisen when considering the bigger picture, the outcome can remain the worst on a personal level. This reality could not possibly be clearer to Alicent as she stands before someone whose eyes are both hauntingly familiar and painfully unfamiliar at once. She thinks of the childhood friend she secretly desired more from while looking upon someone she may no longer know.
