“It’s okay. I know a guy.” Ellie likes talking about Joel like he’s her mob lackey or something. Makes everything feel a little less looming and leering and lethal. She called Joel "a guy" when it came to getting an extra slice of pie or getting outside of Jackson's walls when she needed a day off of school, when she couldn’t fucking stomach it anymore. He told her to cut it out whenever she called him that. It was a bit. She liked all of their bits these days. “He’ll get you out too.”
“I’m Ellie," she volunteers though she doesn't want to. This woman isn’t an enemy. She’s as caged in as Ellie, worn down to the point that she barely had her wits left about her. There was a look in people’s eyes when they got that way, when they’d started giving up hope. Ellie would fucking know.
The woman shakes something loose from her bones, digs her teeth against her lip before she answers, “I’m Sarah.”
Ellie snorts. “Yeah,” she says with only the edges of humor clinging on. “He’ll definitely fucking save you.”
or: On Outbreak Night Joel and Tommy are separated from Sarah. They spend the next twenty-one years assuming each other is dead. Until Ellie and Sarah find each other in the same awful circumstances.

Joel opened the door onto the street and let it swing shut behind him, annoyed when the kid managed to duck around it before it could slow her down.
“I’m not a toddler, dude, I can walk by myself,” The kid said.
“I got my orders,” He ignored the eye roll the kid threw at him, “And quit calling me dude.”
“Whatever you say,” She gave him a sly smile, “Bro.”
(or joel just wants to do his job and go home smelling like a campfire, it'd be great if the raccoon child from the alley would let him do that in peace)

Summary
“Come home with me,” Sarah rushes to say before Ellie can launch into any excuses about loving her own time and space and quiet. She’s sure that there’s some degree of truth to it, but Sarah’s calling bull on Ellie actually wanting to be entirely alone in the freezing, blustery landscape of a Massachusetts winter instead of flying out to Wyoming and spending a few weeks together.
“Sarah…”
“No! No, it’ll be fun, okay? We can do all of my favorite holiday things like bake cookies and watch movies and go shopping. I hate going shopping alone! And my dad already said that you can come, and it’s our first Christmas since he moved up to Wyoming, and it’ll just be…nice if you’re there too.” Everything was already going to be so different, to feel so different. So maybe this difference could be something good. Sarah could stand a chance to look forward to along with all of the change that she was…making the best of. “I want you there too.”

or: Sarah can't stand the concept of Ellie being left all alone over the holidays. Ellie doesn't know if she can stomach forcing her way into some other family's Christmas. And Joel just wants to get it all right.
