Maybe Moonshine just needs to stop pushing it. Draw the boundary for the both of them. It doesn’t matter how deeply Moonshine cares about him—that he’s the first person to make her feel seen, feel important—that she wants to spend the rest of her life with him, every second and millennium of it.

She’s still never going to be able to love him in the right way. In the way that he would want. So maybe the safe thing to do is to roll back over, fall back into trance, and wake up the next morning like nothing ever happened.

    Yeah. The safe option.

Moonshine is fucking tired of playing it safe.

Before her better judgement can catch up with her, she whispers through rapport spores: Hardwon.

Torse is familiar with want, but not this kind, or what seems to be causing it.
    ~
“I can quite literally hear you thinking,” Maxwell murmurs as he works, barely audible. He’s currently elbow deep in Torse’s rib cage, helping to repair him. Torse could do it himself, but Maxwell insisted. And, it is nice not having to find a reflective surface to see what requires fixing.
“Can you?” Torse asks. He’s so used to inhabiting this body that its various sounds — the ejections, and gear clicks, and the whirring of motors — have all become background noise. “What does it sound like?”
Maxwell does a double take, not quite wanting to take his eyes off of what he was working on. Though, by looking into Torse’s visual strip, he isn’t really. All of it is Torse. “Well…” Maxwell pauses, both in speech and his repairs. “It’s not unlike the sound of pressing keys on a typewriter."

    Summary

He remembers the gold of Torse’s heart on his hands tearing open Hatwell’s smug fucking face.
He remembers Wealwell, as solid as ever, spinning a perfect arabesque to kick Johnwell in the teeth.
It's all there in his memory, but it feels… distant, echoey.
    Maxwell feels distant.

After everything, Maxwell breaks, just a little.

    Summary

You're going home. You can hardly believe it. There will be work, of course, but you get to work, you get to fix your world, you saw them, the lights of the Zernai, and now you are going home.

You've decided to take the long way, though. Maxwell is still a little injured.

He's coming with you. He- He had asked to come with you, sent Wealwell and Samwell back to Gath to handle the fallout, and then he'd gripped your golden heart in his hands and asked if you would let him accompany you home. He wished to see the world that made you, the people you belonged to, to provide… companionship.

Currently, he is sitting cross legged in bed, his gaze directed over to you. You realise, not for the first time, that he is beautiful, even now with his eye blacked and his lip split, slow healing.

“You can stretch your legs, you know,” he says, after minutes of silence. “You don't have to sit here and watch me.”

“I enjoy it,” you say, almost lacking fear. “I- I still count myself incredibly lucky to have you here.” It's an easy truth to admit, a test of your self-trust. It has been easier to trust your heart, lately, to take these leaps of faith. He has made it easier.

    Summary

“Torse,” sighs the bosun, a flicker of frustration in her eyes. “You have to let us help him.”
He should let them help. He can’t help Maxwell, he’s not built for helping, he’s built to destroy, to shatter bones and rend metal and and and…
And Maxwell is dying in his arms.
