Or, a deeply unstable Root graduate with no concept of selfhood and only the most tenuous grasp of what sanity might be supposed to look like in sterile lab conditions makes friends, does his best to figure out how independence is supposed to work, terrifies a lot of responsible adults (and less responsible "peers") who really just want to help, and fends off “I can fix him” attempts on all sides (reciprocating with an “I can make him worse” aoe aura). Depressing introspection and unfortunate perspective gaps are only to be expected. This is the best Kabuto's mental health has been ... ever, and the eighth panic attack Hizashi has had this week.

Summary
Baofu—no, Kaoru Saga—his world had ended years ago. There was no prospect, or theory, or family to steady him in the face of love and loss—it was just him and the self that he wished he could claw out of his skin for saving him that day.
But then there was Katsuya. I knew you wouldn’t shoot Katsuya that was still pressing to discover why he was a shell of his former self. Baofu wants to say, pushing him away is for the best because he’s a brat, a bastard, a not-a-friend that got on his nerves beyond measure.
But he settles on thinking, I’m pushing you away because I’m a sorry bastard, and I couldn’t face another day in this godforsaken world if someone hurt for me again.
