The man tugs a little too tight on his hair, and something in Kaveh’s brain short-circuits. Wine and sleep-deprivation crackle between his synapses; white flame bursts behind his eyes. Suddenly, the hands in his hair don’t belong to the Kshahrewar graduate—they belong to someone much younger, much more familiar, whose skin smells like coffee and parchment and mint.

“What does that mean,” Kaveh despairs. He didn’t come out just to get attacked?! “How does this relate to Alhaitham’s curse?!”
“It doesn’t,” Tighnari says flatly, “Because he doesn’t have one.”
“Are you sure?”
“I am sure there is no curse out there that could make Alhaitham affectionate with someone he doesn’t like, or make him spend his money willingly on them. And I am surer by the second that I need to check your brain for defects. Now, please get me a drink.”
