"We cannot touch,” Alhaitham told her, her words like a reprimand, when it was a warning and nothing more. Grey eyebrows were furrowed deeply, as if in deep sorrow or agony, and her lips were pressed together tightly.
Kaveh dropped the hand with which she had intended to pull the other woman from the ground, because it seemed that such gestures were neither appreciated nor helpful. “Why not?”, she asked, like an unknowing child.
“You said you felt it,” the mercenary reminded her as her dual-colored eyes examined Kaveh, as though she feared that the priestess would plot a secret attack just to touch her, just to disobey this rule, just to cross a boundary.
“And you said you feared nothing, which is clearly a lie,” the priestess redirected the conversation and crossed her arms anew, though this time to signal that she would not move to touch the other woman. “What is it that you fear? It is impossible not to fear anything.”
“Consider the impossible possible.”

Kaveh retorts, gritting his teeth, but he immediately shrinks back down at the other’s manic grin.
Haitham, in return, lets out a chortle from the back of his throat.
“Oh, but it is. And it can be, both. Whatever your heart desires. Whatever tune your soul dances to. Either way, we need that information. And I tried coaxing it out of you with everything I thought you’d like. Wine, playing with your hair, my existence.”
Haitham trails a finger down Kaveh’s reddening face and continues, “Yet it seems you need a little push, and that’s okay! It’s just that they are running out of time, so we need to be a little urgent here. In the meantime, get comfy, darling. I’ll be back, alright?”

Summary
The amulet is only supposed to make the emperor fall in love with him. It is not meant to show Kaveh a vision of his former life where he learns his current reality is the plot of a web novel, but it does that, too, somehow.
This revelation allows Kaveh to start fixing all the tragedies that befall the characters in the novel. It allows him to truly connect with others and find companionship where his ignorant counterpart only found loneliness.
But it also makes Kaveh feel terrible when Al-Haitham falls in love with him instead of the heroine, Nilou. It’s all because of the spell, Kaveh repeats to himself, but his traitorous heart starts feeling emotions it most definitely shouldn’t.
But… maybe the curse isn’t what Kaveh thought it was. Maybe, at the end of the day, this could be real.
