Summary
The hunger had only grown stronger on everything Pete gave him, insatiable.
Past the skin, past the lovely cage of bones, there would be heat enough to drown in, blood bright over Vegas's wrists. He could put his hands into that warmth, climb inside while everything was still hot and beating and make himself small in the red dark beneath Pete's ribs.
There would be no boundary there. No miserable last millimeter where one body stopped and another began.

Summary
Yuan Hong had heard that love could come without warning. Still, he assumed he would recognize it when it came. He never imagined it might borrow the faces of ordinary things: the loosening in his chest when Shaoshang’s voice reached him from the far side of the courtyard, a thought finding its proper shape as Shaoshang argued against it, the warmth that spread through him while he ate the noodles Shaoshang so readily cooked for him, indistinguishable from the heat of the broth.
Or: Yuan Hong falls in love for the first time ( ᴗ͈ ˬ ᴗ͈ )ꕤ

Summary
Yuan Hong has faced his share of difficult cases, but understanding Shaoshang has proved considerably more complicated.
An invitation to Mr. Zhao’s birthday offers the perfect opportunity to gather evidence: does Shaoshang treat him differently from everyone else, or is Yuan Hong simply reading too much into it?
The Zhao family, unfortunately, appears to consider the case already closed.

Summary
Shaoshang is a menace, and Yuan Hong is suffering.
He hates every second of it of course, but he’d damn well die before letting anyone else endure it instead. -

Summary
Pete had never struck Vegas as an especially competent bodyguard while he was alive. Expecting him to become a competent zombie had been far too optimistic.

Summary
When he was a child, their home was full of the small house lizards - geckos, as everyone called them. If you caught one, it would twist and writhe until, in a desperate act of freedom, it tore off its own tail to escape. He feels in some way he might have taken after them.
A wise creature, really - willing to sacrifice a living, red-blooded part of itself to protect something greater: life, freedom, the simple right to stay itself. Yet not without a promise that, when the time comes, it will grow back.
And he’s done the same, again and again, giving up pieces of himself for keeping what mattered most. It’s worked for years, he truly believes it kept him alive in some ways. But lately he’s begun to wonder how much of him is left to lose. And whether, unlike the lizard, he forgot to find a safe place to grow them back and instead learned to live with the small he can allow himself to have.—---------
Bible’s mind slips sideways at the worst possible moment.
Build notices and instead of pulling away, he pulls Bible back - piece by fragile piece.
A bath, a breath, a grounding touch.
