There was some noise in the background, what sounded like shuffling - heavy footsteps slapping on tiled flooring. Mark could also hear mechanical beeping - a baby crying. It sounded an awful lot like a hospital. He didn’t know what to make of it. Why would Yiwaa call him from the hospital, or call Mark at all?
Then Yiwaa spoke, her voice cracking on a warble Mark had never heard come from her before, and it felt like he was shattering all over again.
“Mark - Mark, Vee’s been in an accident.”

“Look, if you’re just going to make fun of me—” Akk turned only to find that Ayan was standing right in front of him. He tried to back up, but there was nowhere to go. Ayan took a step forward, trapping him in place. They were close enough that when Ayan spoke, Akk could feel his breath against his lips.
