Summary
Of all the outcomes Derek imagined, he never thought he would be staring down a rifle with Stiles hidden behind him.
“We’re unarmed,” Derek stated, his hands in a placating gesture as he took a step in front of Stiles.
Stiles reached a hand up, taking hold of Derek’s arm as he instructed him to lower his hands. “Hello, father,” he softly greeted the man holding the rifle.
Derek looked at the man, finally taking a moment to realize that it was the man from the photo Stiles had in his suitcase. He lingered beside Stiles, knowing this first impression was not the finest.

Stiles closed his eyes tightly. “Please, I need to see him,” he pleaded. “I wish to see him—to look into his eyes once more.”Stiles thoughts were loudly rushing around them both, memories and thoughts that had nothing but the estate’s walls to hear them for so long. But the last part was clearest for Allison to hear.
Derek, I wish to be with Derek. And to gaze into his eyes … those eyes that the devil would be proud to have.

“That was a long time ago,” Derek finally said, his face falling into its usual cool facade.
Stiles felt like he had been punched in the gut. Two worlds, right? Except, it had never really been two worlds at all. If they lived in two worlds, Stiles wouldn’t feel this unexplainable ache that ran deep in his bones. It had always been one world, with water slipping into the cracks, until there was an ocean between them. Stiles was always caught in the riptides, dragged out to sea where he was left to drown, sinking below the surface as Derek grew further and further out of his reach.
“Yeah,” Stiles agreed, forcing his lips to turn up in the corners, noting the slight crack in his voice, “long time ago."
