“...Mike?”
“Yeah?” Mike replies, feeling all of the weirdness of having a conversation with himself come crashing over him.
“...Are things okay? Now? Is everybody okay?” his younger self says tentatively, and Mike’s eighteen year old heart breaks for all that this version of him has yet to experience.
“Yeah,” he all but whispers. “We’re okay.” He doesn’t tell his younger self about El, about the grief and the nightmares and the panicking that haven’t gone away. He doesn’t tell him about the fissures that have formed within the party, the chasm of grief that none of them can really bring themselves to speak about but which lingers in every room they share. He doesn’t talk about how he and Will haven’t fallen asleep in front of a movie together in a long time.
Thirteen year old Mike Wheeler wakes up in 1989, runs into his eighteen year old self, and has a lot of opinions.

“Okay, okay, I see you, Wheeler.” Max grins, and though he’s blushing, Mike smiles back. “So, who is he? What does he look like? Where did you meet him?”
“Jesus Christ, you’re as bad as Nancy and my mom,” Mike groans, rolling his eyes. “I’d also like to point out that I’m not dating him yet, and I have no idea if he even likes guys. But Max, he is quite literally the most gorgeous person I have ever seen in my life. Like holy fuck, he’s pretty. And he’s nice and funny, and I saw him reading that book series I was telling you about the other week, and holy shit, I want to kiss him so badly—”

It's sophomore year of college, and Max's best friend, Mike Wheeler, has just met the guy of his dreams. The only problem? Mike's mystery crush just so happens to be dating the guy of Max's dreams.

Summary
“I don’t think that it has to mean that you’re into guys,” Lucas says. His words are accompanied by a casual shrug, and said in the tone of someone who has clearly already given this subject some thought. Will doesn’t know what to do with that information. Jump from a building, maybe. “I mean, we’d all get flustered if Spider-Man carried us in his arms.”
Mike points to him enthusiastically. “Thank you, Lucas.”
Dustin looks between the two of them, his eyes narrowed.
“...Would we?”
“Sure,” Mike concludes. “He’s attractive. That’s not a weird thing to think.”
Will just barely resists the urge to bang his head against the table. He feels Dustin’s eyes glued to his burning face, and sinks even further down his chair.
In which Mike tells Spider-Man that he has a crush on his best friend, and Will jumps to some very wrong conclusions.

Summary
Sometimes, even this close, always in the same space, Mike feels like there’s a want inside him that aches so much, like Will is somehow going to drift away if he doesn’t reach out and latch onto him. He’s clingy, he’s gross, and the world has already ended and somehow pieced itself back together.
Maybe Mike deserves to be clingy and gross and a little, a lot, in love.

Or, Mike and Will have their first kiss during the end of the world. Kissing a second time, when everything is finally back to normal, takes a lot more courage.

Summary
“Looks like I bit you.” Will tilts his head to get a better look. All Mike can do is stare at him. His fluffy hair at the front, clumped pieces at the back where he’d slid his fingers in a mere few minutes before. His pretty green eyes that look hazel or even brown in this light, the dark circles he gets when he drinks framing them like intricate paintings. A satisfied, bloody smile.
Mike isn’t satisfied. He swallows thickly, choking down the words 'don’t you want more?'
Or: Will dresses as a vampire for a college halloween party, but Mike thinks his costume isn’t bloody enough. Will lets him fix it. Mike goes into a crisis.

“Wait,” Will said in a harsh, croaky voice. He felt like his brain was dribbling out of his ears and he fell onto the couch with a small poof of air as he stared at Mike in such a hard daze that it was a wonder he didn’t pass out again. “I - what do you - “
They stared at each other.
The air was thick and suddenly it was like Will could taste ozone at the back of his tongue, like electricity was coating his mouth and didn’t leave any room to breathe, to think, and his voice was wobbly, uncertain, as he said, “what do you mean… other boys?”

“How long has it been?” Mike asks. “Since you’ve eaten?” His hand is still on top of Will’s. They’ve never been this close before.
Will moves closer. “Weeks,” he says. Mike’s eyes widen. “It’s never been this bad.”
Mike stares at him for a moment, and Will can’t bear to keep his eyes open. He can taste the air between them and it’s making him sick. Will’s suddenly too hot under the blankets, undead heart pounding against his ribcage.
When he finally opens his eyes again, Mike pulls at the collar of his shirt, revealing his neck.

Summary
It had only gotten worse when the school year started. Max was pulling away, Lucas wanted to be popular for some reason, and only Dustin acted with any semblance of normality. Mike hadn’t known what to do with himself.
He hadn’t known himself. He’d pictured his mom with the wine glass. His father asleep in his La-Z-Boy. He saw himself in the basement, rotting away while Will and El were probably living it up in sunny California, and he ached.
He’d only made it through because of Hellfire. Because of Eddie’s bright maniacism and Dustin’s splashy laugh and Lucas’s steadying smile around him at the table while they rolled dice and were able to forget that the world contained evil they could not defeat.
But he’d been lost. He’d been so stuck and only barely staying afloat; his face dipping into the water, slipping down only to push himself off the bottom over and over and over and he was exhausted of it all.
OR, post S4, Mike has a think one night and realizes a few things.
