The rain was a cold, endless whisper against Wilbur’s cloak, soaking the velvet to dead weight on his shoulders. He rode alone, as he had demanded — no guards, no advisers, no witnesses. Only the furious drum of his horse’s hooves through the mud, and the unrelenting darkness ahead.
The rebel camp lay just beyond the river, torches flickering in the mist like the eyes of beasts.
And somewhere beyond those torches, Wilbur knew, was Tommy.
Or the one where Tommy went against Wilbur, and his kingdom, but before that, they were believed to run deeper than that. They had loved each other. Maybe still do.

Summary
Tommy often wondered what he did wrong to be born during what was essentially the end of the world. The flooding was one of the first main threats to people’s way of life. Cities had been slowly sinking for a while, now—since long before Tommy was born. The apocalypse had been coming for quite some time, accumulating over years and years of environmental decay. Forest fires, melting ice caps, and increasingly intense hurricanes and storms.
They were safe down here in the bunker, at least. At least here he had Wilbur. Wilbur took good care of him. He kept Tommy safe and healthy and alive. Tommy couldn’t imagine what his world would be like without the man looking over him.

Aka: In the midst of the apocalypse, Wilbur finds himself falling for Tommy Innit, the kid he saved and took under his wing. He doesn’t always have the best intentions, though. After all, he was only human.
