Peyton Ellis had an okay life. Yeah, she suffered through major depressive mood swings once and a while and had shit parents. But life was okay. Peyton had her friends. Robin, Finney, and Vinnie. She'd probably say that she was friends with Finney's sister, Gwen, too. If gossiping together playfully counts as friendship. She'd probably go as far as admitting she was friends with Bruce Yamada, as well. Life was okay, it wasn't great, but it was okay.

Vance Hopper is your average 16-year-old unless you factor in his instinctual need for violence. He doesn’t always mean to be a bad guy, he’s just pretty sure that his dad beat the asshole into him and he hasn't tried hard to change it. He likes how fighting feels, it’s familiar. He likes to push people away, and if it takes fear to make it happen he’s fine with that. So why the hell does this goth chick treat him like he’s an actual person? He doesn’t know why she looks at him like she understands.
Rain Moore is tired of this new town. There’s no existing quietly in this suburban nightmare. So yeah, she hates this town but she doesn’t hate Vance Hopper. She knows that she should hate him for the rage he slings around like a weapon, but he is distinctly different from her father. So she doesn’t hate him, she pities him. She appreciates the beauty in his violence, the desperation in the way that every breath he takes is a struggle to survive. Every punch is a victory over a foe who isn’t even there. She knows.
