Summary
Against all odds, 14-year-old Vance Hopper escapes the Grabber after 5 1/2 months in captivity. He’s found by the police uncovering the bodies of the other victims, his own body drenched in his kidnapper's blood. But survival doesn't mean healing. With the trauma still raw and his life in ruins, Hawkins, Indiana, is the last place on his mind- until his mother, desperate and out of options, sends him to live with her estranged brother-in-law: Chief Jim Hopper.
Hopper’s barely keeping his own life together. Between raising El, staying one step ahead of the government, and holding his grief at arm’s length, the last thing he needs is another broken kid under his roof. But when Vance shows up- scarred, angry, and still half-stuck in the basement he escaped- Hopper recognizes something too familiar in the boy’s eyes.
As Hopper juggles keeping El safe and keeping Vance out of trouble, the past starts clawing its way back- both his and the boy’s. Rumors spread, tempers flare, and Vance’s old habits come dangerously close to undoing the fragile safety he’s built.

He didn’t do sports, or waste his time with those meaningless, forced conversations with the person he’s seated next to in Algebra (Because, yes, he’s in Algebra as a junior. Held back twice. Not his greatest moments, or something he’d like to mention more than once). But what the people of North Denver did know? Don’t test your luck with his temper, because he’ll beat your face in until it’s unrecognizable.
Naturally, this brought Vance to the sheriff’s office almost every other day. He got quite cozy with Sheriff Yamada, the man seemingly caring more about him than his own douchebag father ever did. And, another perk of the police station was the sheriff’s son. Bruce Yamada.

Vance almost choked on smoke as he looked up at Bruce, with wide eyes.“What?”
“Can you teach me…how to fight?” Bruce asked louder, and a bit more nervously.
Vance, in his exasperated state, started to laugh. It sound more like cackle, but it was still a laugh. “You're joking, right? Like, you’re fucking with me?”
Bruce frowned and shook his head, “I - No, I’m not joking. I wish I was -” sighing, he took a deep breath “You’re the last person on this earth I want to ask for help, but I really need to learn to fight."
Vance shook his head, and ran a hand through his hair. He took a deep inhale of his cigarette before throwing it to the ground, stomping on it.
“Ok sure, I'll help ya. But only if you do something for me."

Vance is asked to help teach Bruce how to fight. And he agrees, for the fuck of it. But what he doesn't see, is how fast one can fall in love. No matter how hard we try and fight it.

Vance Hopper is your average 16-year-old unless you factor in his instinctual need for violence. He doesn’t always mean to be a bad guy, he’s just pretty sure that his dad beat the asshole into him and he hasn't tried hard to change it. He likes how fighting feels, it’s familiar. He likes to push people away, and if it takes fear to make it happen he’s fine with that. So why the hell does this goth chick treat him like he’s an actual person? He doesn’t know why she looks at him like she understands.
Rain Moore is tired of this new town. There’s no existing quietly in this suburban nightmare. So yeah, she hates this town but she doesn’t hate Vance Hopper. She knows that she should hate him for the rage he slings around like a weapon, but he is distinctly different from her father. So she doesn’t hate him, she pities him. She appreciates the beauty in his violence, the desperation in the way that every breath he takes is a struggle to survive. Every punch is a victory over a foe who isn’t even there. She knows.
