It traces how their relationship begins in secret, deepens through crisis, and survives (or doesn't, at various points) the weight of bad timing, wrong choices, and the particular difficulty of loving someone while being afraid to. The series moves through major canon events while rewriting and expanding them, features Emily as a trans woman — from the charged early years, through a catastrophic case that changes everything, to the quieter and harder work of living with the aftermath and fallout. Less romance as a destination than what two imperfect people actually look like over time.

They retired from the BAU when Emily turned 55. She was the Section Chief, but it had taken a lot out of her, and she didn’t need to work for the money. JJ was only 47, but she’d endured enough tragedy for a lifetime, so she left with Emily and didn’t look back. They bought the farmhouse on a whim, wrote a plan on a piece of notebook paper the day they left Quantico, and put that plan into action.
