Indistinct though his reflection might be, reflected in the bronze face of Stede’s old shaving mirror, Ed can’t see that man anywhere he looks. All he sees is silver stubble. His eyes are brown.

“He’s so little,” Ed whispered when he caught Stede watching him. “How could anyone do that? How could anyone see this tiny, scared little baby, and just leave him all on his own? Why didn’t anyone want to help him?”
“You wanted to help him,” Stede pointed out, as gently as he could.
Ed just sniffled and looked away. “What if I hadn’t been there?”
