Summary
All the stories warn against going into the woods, warn about creatures hiding there. They say there are lilting voices singing from the shadows, promising glittering daydreams with sharp teeth. They say the creatures there will take you far away to never be seen again.
There was a boy, the village whisperers, safely in the circle of light, glancing over their shoulders at the trees beyond it. There was a boy who strayed too far.
They say you can still hear his laughter as it’s carried on a breeze, bright and wild, like youth frozen in amber, like ghosts falling delicate from the branches.
(Strange things happen to boys who linger too long beyond the veil. Magic infects like a disease, like rot, eating away everything human that lingers, until his eyes are an unbroken summer sky blue and there are flowers in his hair and he sings with a voice that haunts the shadows.)

Summary
Wilbur Soot was a faerie, and a good one at that. He took pride in the fact that he had tricked thousands of souls into slavery and debt, the fact that he had mastered words. It was a fae's greatest accomplishment, and he took honor in the fact he was known as a ruthless trickster even if his father didn't agree with the notion.
When he was alerted to someone stepping into his faerie ring late into the night, he got up with a groan. He really wasn't in the mood to deal with a greedy soul trying to make a deal, but whatever, he supposed.
He stepped into the human world, grimacing at how bland it was. How magic didn't float through the air with every breath, how dry the air was.
He frowned further when there was a blond/e human at his feet, picking from his berry bush. Nevertheless, he plastered a charming smile on his face and drew attention to himself. "Excuse me, you're intruding in my ring."
When Wilbur, a cruel faerie meets a bright young soul under poor circumstances, can he really bring himself to trick him? With open arms, he welcomes the kid in for a hug - but is it an honest hug or truly just manipulation?

Summary
But Wilbur is a ball and chain in the middle of the sea, slowly but steadily dragging himself down to the ocean floor with Tommy unknowingly trapped inside his cuff. It’s unfair that Tommy has had to drown with Wilbur for so many years, desperately trying to swim both of them back to the surface. It’s fruitless, and Tommy wonders sometimes if it would be better to just cut the chain that binds them together. To let Wilbur sink on his own, while Tommy heads for air.
He could never do that though; as much as he wants to. He’ll let Wilbur sink them both, and Tommy will swim and thrash as the surface grows more and more distant. Hoping and wishing for a lifeboat. For someone to help them to shore, and to pull Tommy’s freezing body into their warm, loving arms and drape a towel over his wet shoulders.
He thinks Phil might be that person, Techno too. Tommy wants to let them be and he wishes for Wilbur to want that too.
OR: Wilbur and Tommy are brothers in the foster system. Wilbur is struggling with addiction, Tommy is always left to pick up the pieces. But now with Techno and Phil here, hopefully they’ll be able to help. (Only Wilbur does not want help.)
